«Dear AUF Comrades,
I was intended to write this message to you a few days ago, but unfortunately internet was shutdown in the whole country.
Perhaps some of you already saw in media what’s going on in Belarus these days. We have a dictator president Lukashenka for 26 years already. The only reason why he so long in power is because the results are falsified. Last time we had 2nd round of the elections in 1994 when he came to power.
In Belarus, we do not have freedom of speech. Many of our Comrades were persecuted for their Social-Democratic views. You can easily get into prison just for saying, for example, ‘Long Live Belarus’ in the street.
This election the vast majority of Belarus people gave their votes to the alternative candidate Svetlana Tsikanovskaya hoping to get rid of the dictator, willing Democracy and change. But again the results were falsified and that made people went out to protest throughout the country.
The police and military forces behave very brutal and violent. Thus more than 6000 are in prison, more than 250 are injured including children. Now we are at a loss and don’t know what to do. So painful to aware that we are facing 5 more years of Dictatorship and humiliation ahead.
Anyway, we want to thank AUF, as our true comrades who helped us making common seminars, invited us to take part in your Summer camp in Utoya, helped us with the tickets at IUSY Congress and Summer camps.
Your country has a long history of Democracy, but please, never take it for a granted. Be proud and remember that in some parts of the words there are people who are still desperately fighting for it.»
